Prior to the Meiji Reformation, under the rule of TokuGawa BaKufu, there appeared a few cities in Japan whose economic activities were focused on industries and trade. The growth of new cities was the result of the policy of "Soldier-Farmer Separation" and the development of the commodity money economy. The rise of these cities, in return, pushed the further growth of the market economy and put forth the bud of the early capitalism in Japan. It provided the material basis for the upcoming social revolution.
