The Second World War was a disaster to countries in Western Europe. After the War, the appeal for a united Europe and for common prosperity became overwhelmingly popular. As far as the overall strength was concerned, Britain was "a one-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind", and so it was the most probable leader in the integration of Europe. However, it was France that finally took the lead, and Britain missed the "bus" of European integration. Was it due to Britain's lack of interest therein, or because it had other intentions? The present paper, probing into Britain' s policy towards the integration of Europe during 1945 -1951, analyzes the key factors that contributed to this historical outcome.
