In November 2007, the 'Symposium on Building up a System of World History Studies from a Chinese Perspective' was held under the joint auspices of the editorial office of Historical Research, the editorial office of World History, the Institute of World History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Liaoning University. Participants in the symposium engaged in active discussions and exchanges on a wide range of topics. Consensus has been reached despite some differences. All participants agreed that a new system of world history studies from a Chinese perspective should be built to replace the old Eurocentric one. The changing national and international environments in the past three decades since reform and opening up, expanding exchanges with the international academic community, and the efforts Chinese historians (of Chinese and of world history) have made and the insights they have attained all provide preconditions and possibilities for such a new system. However, differences exist over what should be taken as the core of this new system and how it should be built. We present here several representative views to call for more attention from historians and others who are interested, in hope that discussions and debates may facilitate the building of such a new system.
