快到9点的时候，阿基米得·瑟谷梭在餐桌前坐定，摊开餐巾。他太太先到客厅放下窗帘，再过来跟他同席。这是她每晚的习惯性动作，已行之有年。瑟谷梭太太很清楚，没有人能看透窗户，放下窗帘只是她让家人涵泳于家庭氛围的方法。瑟谷梭家住卡佩罗宫三楼。卡佩罗是一幢位于市中心的16世纪宫邸，有条狭小的运河环绕建筑物两侧，再流入稍远处的大运河。

Shortly before rune o＇clock, at the dinner table and unfolded Archimede Seguso sat down his napkin. Before joining him, his wife went into the living room to lower the curtains, which was her long-standing evening ritual. Signora Seguso knew very well that no one could see in through the windows, but it was her way of enfolding her family in a domestic embrace. The Segusos lived on the third floor of Ca＇ Capello, a sixteenth-century house in the heart of Venice. A narrow canal wrapped around two sides of the building before flowing into the Grand Canal a short distance away.
