In the judicial practice of imperial China, oral confession was not unique. During hearing process, judges paid attention to the objective documentary evidence, especially in civil cases. Based on many cases, this essay will discuss the judicial operation of the ancient documentary evidence system, indicating its characteristics in order to draw upon historic experience for improving the current documentary evidence system.
