New Horizons in the Formal Study of Noun Phrases:The Multi-layer DP Hypothesis

This paper gives a brief introduction of the Multi-layer DP hypothesis put forward by Zamparelli. We begin with an elaboration on the relations between the DP hypothesis and the Multi-layer DP hypothesis. Then, the main ideas of the Multi-layer DP hypothesis are given, followed by a briefing of its theoretical and empirical motivations. After that, we present an ana]ysls of the kind- construction, the existential construction and the locative construction in English in the framework of this hypothesis. It is shown that this hypothesis is not only economical in terms of theory construction but superior in terms of empirical coverage as well.
