Not for the Pursuit of Kindness but for the Pursuit of Truthfulness—An Analysis of Character Depiction in A Dream of Red Mansions

从中国古典长篇小说的发展历程中考察了《红楼梦》人物塑造的原则:一是价值观原则,分别从出世观的无是非和入世观的多元道德出发,写出了人物的复杂性,从而引起读者认同的多向性;二是审美观原则,以"求真"贯穿作品始终,并且分析了这一原则的多元构成。

From the developmental process of Chinese classical novels is derived the principle of character depiction in A Dream of Red Mansions.The first is the principle of values,which starts from the non-integrity of isolation from the society and from the multi-morality of integration into the society.The complicatedness of characters is described,which arouses the reader＇s multi-dimensional recognition.The second is the principle of aesthetics with the pursuit of truthfulness as the main theme penetrating the whole piece of work and with the pluralistic components analyzed.
