The Conformity behind Contradiction:On Criticism of Yan Fu's Translation Version and His Translation Criterion

严复"信"、"达"、"雅"翻译标准的提出在中国翻译史上具有划时代的意义。后人对于严复的译本及其翻译标准褒贬不一。本文拟从对严复译本及其翻译标准的批评谈起,意在说明严复的译本在看似矛盾的背后所蕴含的统一。

The proposition of Yan Fu＇ s translation, namely faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance, has made a turning point for the Chinese translation history. The advocators have different opinions on Yan Fu＇ s translation and his criterion. Most of them agree with it while a few of people do not. In the article it argues on Yan Fu＇ s translation version and his translation criterion in order to discuss the conformity behind the contradiction.
