As a master of short stories, Katherine Mansfield＇ s distinctive narrative art is perfectly shown in short story ＂The Daughters of the Late Colonel＂. This paper attempts to analyze two main types of distinctive symbolic imagess to show the suppressing influence of the late father on his daughters. Though some symbolic images in the story suggest the prospect of a new world before them, the sisters are subjected to living under the patriarchal influence of the past. By making use of the symbolic images in the story, Mansfield shows her concern for women in the patriarchal culture and calls for women to act for their own freedom.
