The novel Gertrude and Claudius by Updike retells Shakespeare's Hamlet and changes the object (Gertrude) into subject and the subject (Hamlet) into object. Thus, the subject's (Hamlet's) saying becomes the object's (Gertrude's) saying. Through the change of the character's status and the story's mold, this novel expresses a new ethical meaning.
