霍桑在其小说《红字》中塑造了女主人公海丝特.白兰(Hester Prynne)的形象。对此形象评论界褒贬不一。从基督教的婚姻神学来解读白兰的形象,可以见其人性的内涵。白兰实际上是圣母玛丽亚形象在新英格兰开发初期的外化,其本质是反对清教对人性之禁锢,主张人的两性和谐相处,世代繁衍,与环境一起成长。

Hawthorn has created a character of Hester Pryrme in his novel Scarlet Letter, which has received both praises and censures. However, the connotation of humanity is revealed when the image is studied from the Christian matrimony theology. Prynne is in fact the embodiment of the Virgin Mary in the early period in the development of New England, and in essence,is against the puritan＇s shackle of humanity and advocates the harmony between man and woman for the generation reproduction and healthy growth with the environment.
