Causes for the Defiance of the Imperial Succession System in the Early Tang Dynasty

从李氏一族重武功及唐初权臣之政治地位两方面分析了唐朝前期(玄宗以前)皇位继承制度不稳定的主要原因,即李氏一族自北魏后世代为将,而且与少数民族有很深的渊源,因此选择嗣位之君,有"择勇猛者立之"的倾向;唐初关陇军事贵族与山东士族在政治上占有重要地位,双方均欲拥立嗣君,以得元勋之功。

It is pointed out that there were two causes for the defiance of the imperial succession system in the early Tang Dynasty： as a result of family tradition, the Royal Lee Family put much emphasis on the successor＇s martial arts; either of the two important political parties wanted to have its own leader throned so that it could take credit for so doing.
