"Ligeia" which fuses the theme of transcendence and the lost love is Poe' s favorite tale. This tale presents critics and readers a challenging story to discuss, it is an incredible puzzle with plenty grist for debate. One never gets to the bottom of it. Would Poe' s unfortunate destiny make his soul want to seek escape from the world of dream for a unity, and thus a character like Ligeia was born from his psyche? Would Poe want to condense the history of man as a narrative of recurrent death into one sym- bolic night? Would Poe have us focus upon a murder or upon a reincarnation or something else?
