A New Image of China——An analysis of the revised edition of My Country and My People by Lin Yutang

林语堂著《吾国与吾民》1939年增订版塑造的浴火重生的中国形象,较其1935年初版中混乱而无望的中国形象,所描写的形象可谓是焕然一新。而这一形象的变换是相关的历史事实、舆论氛围、读者需要、作者心态等因素多方影响的结果,从而蕴含着丰富的历史文化意义。

Lin Yutang, one of the most famous writer in China, wrote his masterpiece My Country and My People in English and had it published in 1935. In this book, China was described as a chaotic and hopeless country. However, the revised edition in 1939 created a new image of China after experiencing great difficulties. It is clear that historical facts, public opinions, readers＇ need as well as the author＇s attitude caused the change take place. And the change undoubtedly is full of significance to history and cultures.
