LI Hungzhang and Lianchi College

李鸿章就任直隶总督后,重视地方教育,他为莲池书院购置书籍,设学古堂,订立《学古堂章程》。李鸿章先后聘黄彭年、张裕钊、吴汝纶主讲莲池书院,为他们提供了宽松的教学环境,书院自由讲学的传统在一定程度上得以恢复,培养了大批有用之才,促进了直隶乃至全国的教育近代化进程。

After he became Governor of Zhili Province, Li Hung-zhang paid much attention to local education. He bought a lot of books for Lianchi College, set up Classics-learning Classroom and formulated Regulations for Classics-learning Classroom. He hired Huang Peng-nian Zhang Yu-zhao and Wu Ru-lun as lecturers of Lianchi College, and offered them liberal teaching and learning environment. To a certain extent, this led to the liberal teaching in its traditional state. Under such circumstances, Lianchi College trained a lot of talents and promoted the process of educational modernization in Zhili Province and all over the country.
