Eugene O' Neill cares about the modern society and the dilemma of the modem man. His plays reflect the features of modem selves and their frustration. Employing Charles Taylor' s theories on the self, the author of this paper presents an ethical reading of Beyond the Horizon. It analyzes the construction of Robert' s moral self and his inherent inner conflicts in order to show how divided self shapes the life of Robert and thus leads to his tragedy. The author suggests that by creating Robert as an illustration of modem self, O'Neill has actually discerned and revealed the relationship between the identity problem of modern man and their spiritual crisis.
