The differences between "truth" and "sincerity" and the contrast between "imagination" and "fantasy" are the keys to the understanding of Murdoch' s theory of fiction and her philosophical ideas. For her, "others" and "contingency" are so important that without them novelists can never achieve the state of "unselfing" and goodness. Once we approach her theory from this perspective, we are more likely to grasp its essence.
