If we tanke freedom as the relative freedom advocated by John Fowles (1926 -2005 ), then Sarah in his The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) is free in that she is invisible to the society she dislikes. Her invisibility results from her invented love story with the French lieutenant and her shelter in Rossetti' s notorious art studio with the aid of the male narrator, Charles and Doctor Grogan. Sarah' s visibility is the result of her inability to escape from the world of reality. Her visibility invites her to rethink about her freedom and responsibility and stimulates Charles' s reconsiderations of life and marriage. The open ending of the novel provides a new dimension for Sarah' s invisibility. The intermingling of visibility and invisibility casts light on the narrative freedom of fiction, which is highlighted by the freedom of the characters.
