AIM. To explore the treatment opportunity for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) by Argon laser photocoagulation.
METHODS: According to the time from onset of CRVO that was treated by Argon laser photocoagulation, thirtyeight eyes were divided into three groups. Twenty-three eyes in group A were treated within 4-8 weeks; 9 eyes in group B were treated at 12-16 weeks and 6 eyes in group C were treated 20 weeks after the onset of CRVO. Three patterns of photocoagulation by Argon laser were performed, local, panretinal photocoagulation or macular lattice photocoagulation according to the fundus fluorescein angiography.
RESULTS: Two-year follow-up showed that visual acuity 〉0.3 in 17 eyes (74%) in group A, 4 eyes (44%) in group B and only 1 eye (17%) in group C. Moreover, 2 eyes in group C developed into neovascular glaucoma (NVG).
CONCLUSION: Photocoagulation is beneficial to improve the outcome of visual acuity in early-stage CRVO while merely to prevent the complication in late-stage.
