英语测试能力是英语教师专业能力的重要组成部分。每一位英语教师都应认识和了解语言测试的基本知识和方法，以及英语测试设计和实施的理念和原则，增强测试改革的意识，使英语测试在理念和实践上跟上当前中学英语课改和教改的步伐，推动而不是妨碍中学英语教学改革的顺利进行。

English testing is one of the important tools of English evaluation, but evaluation is not its exclusive function. As a means of assisting English teaching, English testing can provide with teachers much useful information concerning learners and their learning process. So, competence for testing is an important component of the overall professional competence of English teachers. It follows that every teacher should have a good and correct understanding of language testing, its basics and methods, the new beliefs and principles in test design and use. Besides, he should have a strong awareness of testing innovation and make English testing keep up, both in theory and practice, with the pace of current reforms of middle-school English curriculum and teaching methodology so as to help promote instead of interfere with such reforms.
