The rapid development of fishery science and technology has brought about a large number of newlycoined fishery terms, translation of which requires a good understanding of word - formation and rendering methods. Fishery terms are usually generated by compounding, conversion, derivation, abbreviation, borrowing and blending. Both literal and free translation can be used to translate such terms： the former consists of translitera- tion, pictographic translation and transplantation, while the latter includes deduction, extension and annotation.
