Chen Yinque, the great historian, wrote a series of prefaces to the works by with reference to old documents, in which he reflected on his academic experience expressed other scholars and epilogues and research methods, and his feelings about life and worldly affairs. These writings are not only based on Chen's interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with his "sympathy of understanding", but also serve as a way to comfort his friends, which can be seen as important materials to reveal Chen Yinque's academic approaches and spirits as well as his attitude towards life. This article discusses Chen's research methods in history studies by analyzing dozens of his prefaces and epilogues collected in the Anthology of Chen Yinque, and also attempts to interpret Chen Yinque both as a person and as a scholar in an alternative way.
