益阳乡土上诞育了许多新人新作,但本地新作家们对前辈作家立波先生及其作品是仰视着的。益阳地土民俗独特,民风淳厚,地貌复杂,不象北方大平原那样一览无余,山之阻隔,水之迢迢,使得十里不同音。立波先生用家乡益阳方言写出了不少烩炙人口的乡土小说。作品最大限度地录入了益阳20世纪50年代原汁原味的方言乡音,这是很珍贵的。方言的作用并不只是在于文学本身,它是一部民族文化和民族语言的发展史。

There are many new writers and their new works of literature in Yiyang native land. The local writers respect the senior writer Zhou Libo. Yiyang is of unique land with native people here being simple and homest and different earth surface, where it is not like the flatland in the north China. Yiyang is of hills, mountains and hilltocks.There are the winding streams and rivers. The local dialects produced are quite different everywhere aparted in a small distance. There are many native land stories and novels written by Zhou Libo in local dialects. These works enjoyed great popularity which recorded the original local dialects of Yiyang. The function of dialect is not only the literature itself but also is served the development of the national culture and national languge.
