China and New Zealand signed a free trade agreement on April 7,2008,in Beijing.This is the f irst time that China has signed a pact of this kind with a developed country.The pact will take effect on October 1,2008.The 18-chapter pact contains 214 items and will spur both countries to open their markets to each other and will further their cooperative relations.One of the key provisions of this FTA is that New Zealand promises to abolish all the import customs duties currently imposed on items imported from China before January 1,2016.Even before this date,63.6 percent of these goods will have already exempt from tariffs since October 1,2008.China will likewise abrogate 97.2 percent of the import customs duties it imposes on New Zealand's goods by January 1,2019,with 24.3 percent of those benef iting from zero tariffs as soon as the pact comes into force.These provisions will greatly enhance the trade of tangible goods between the two nations.For the trade in services between the two countries,New Zealand made promises beyond WTO commitments for sixteen sectors in four categories:businesses,construction,education,and environment.China also made corresponding promises for fifteen sectors in four categories:businesses,environment,sports and entertainment,and transportation.
