Yan Hua and Xie Zheng, the outstanding figures of the Yangzhou School, made great contributions to and exerted a far-reaching impact on Chinese paintings. Both of them were expert in the freehand brushwork of birds and flowers. Their paintings draw many similarities as well as dissimilarities. This article compares the personal experience, ideology, artistic heritage and painting techniques of the two great painters.
