含混是《白鲸》永葆魅力的主要原因。所谓含混,即作者有意识地使文本具有不确定性和迷惑性。从构成上看,梅尔维尔在意义标志和主题设置上均采用了多重选择式手法,从而使文本具有开放性《。白鲸》含混的根源是梅尔维尔伦理思想的复杂性甚至矛盾性。含混也是一种审美效果和写作方式,是梅尔维尔对文学传统有意识地继承和发展的结果。
Moby Dick is ambiguous i.e. it is capable of more than one interpretations. The existence of ambiguous symbols and the vagueness of the novel＇s theme are both reflections of the ambiguity of Moby Dick. Melville＇s contradiction on ethnical ground and learning from other writers are causations for Moby Dick＇s ambiguity.
