Hypofunction or loss of salivary gland functions is often seen in clinic. Currently there are no effective methods for recovery of salivary gland functions. With the development of new technologies including gene transfer and tissue engineering, it is possible to reconstruct salivary gland functions. The clinical trial is now being performed in USA using transferring AdCMVAQP1 to parotid glands damaged by irradiation therapy for the patients with head and neck cancers. Pre-clinical experiments are also being done using stable, long term vector (AAVAQP1) transfer in the large animal model.
