Tan Dun, a world-renowned contemporary Chinese composer, has produced a lot of influential symphonies, film music and piano music, which are well-known for the typical national style. His short piano composition Watching a Play presents a vivid view of Xiangshui folk customs by a unique means of artistic expression, using the percussion of gong and drum and the two variations of theme.
