乡土小说起始于20世纪20年代,也成熟于20世纪20年代,它用现实主义的笔法为我们展示了20世纪初期中国乡村的衰败和当时农民的悲惨命运,以及流淌在这些作品中的无处不在的现代都市意识。作家们通过自己的创作在精神上一次次还乡,剖析民族的痼疾,并参与民族文化的重建,并以此来完成自己对乡人的人道主义的关怀与批判。

The countryside novel emerged and matured in the 1920s. With realistic technique, it displays us a picture of decaying countryside in the early 20^th century and the tragic fate of the farmers at that time. Meanwhile, it shows us the modem urban consciousness which is ubiquitary in these works. Through their own creation, the writers returned to their hometowns mentally again and again, analyzing the chronic diseases of the nationality, and participating in the reconstruction of the national culture whereby the writers could accomplish their care for and criticism of the countrymen humanistically.
