肺癌的分期是仅次于病理组织细胞学类型的重要因素。上世纪50年代美国退伍军人肺癌协会（Veterans Administration Lung Study Group，VALSG）的随机临床试验中引用了小细胞肺癌（small cell lung cancer，SCLC）的第一个分期标准。这种简易的方法将SCLC分为两类，称为局限期（1imited disease，LD）和广泛期（extensive disease，ED）。
