A Pragmatic Analysis of Hedges in Communication

模糊限制语是语言交际中常见的语言现象,具有丰富的语用功能。全文首先介绍了模糊限制语的定义和语用分类,然后从会话含义、合作原则和礼貌原则的角度分析了模糊限制语的语用功能。恰当使用模糊限制语能够使语言表达更加准确、礼貌和得体,所以在英语教学中应对模糊限制语作明示处理。

Hedges, a common linguistic phenomenon in communication, have abundant pragmatic functions. In the present paper, hedges are defined and classified, with their pragmatic functions in communication analyzed from three perspectives： conversational implicature, co--operative principle, and politeness principle. The appropriate use of hedges may make the language more polite and more appropriate. So the explicit treatment of hedges in teaching is necessary.
