Religion and literature are two essential components of social ideology. By elaborating on the effects on human beings＇ thought brought by religion and analyzing the ideas and works during the early period of American literature, this paper strives to draw the outline of the evolutionary process of Human-God relationship from looking up on God and down on Human to Humanism. This process reveals the close relationship between the evolution of religion and the development of society. It is of great importance to know the evolutionary process, which helps to understand the essence of religion as well as its effects on American literature in the early period.
