Abstract A new method by surface enhaneced Raman spectroscopy for clarifying the structure and the properties of naturally occurring humic substances is presented. This technique is able to provide abundant structural and compositional information and is very sensitive and selective to humic substances extracted from each environment. It is shown that humic substances may have two or more chemical constituents of aromatic compounds. Humic substamces extracted from some soils and sea water are rich in carboxylate groups and possibly also 1,3 substituted heterocyclic aromatic constituents while those from black soil and coals are poor. The method is suitable for studying the binding sites of humic substances with metal ions.
