Abstract Self assembly of thiol derivatives on gold has been used as a well established route for interfacial engineering. In this work, an organic surface terminated by amino groups, which exhibits strong affinity to gold nanoparticles, has been successfully created by self assembling paminothiolphenol onto sputtered gold substrates through Au S bonding. Well defined gold nanoparticulate films can be readily formed by immersing the SAM modified gold substrates into colloidal gold suspensions for a given time, as revealed by the tapping mode atomic force microscopic observations. Thus prepared gold nanoparticulate films were shown to be SERS active, as evidenced by the strongly enhanced Raman scattering from the underlying SAMs. To our knowledge, it might be the first report to demonstrate that thus prepared gold nanoparticulate film can intrinsically enhance the Raman scattering from molecules just below it.
