The concept of redemption echoes insistently throughout Eliot's Ariel poems, which as a group represents a monumental transition from The Waste Land cycle of poems to the new phase of his creative work marked by his dramatic writings and the Four Quartets. He conceptualizes redemption in terms of three motifs:paradoxical ambiguity of life and death, pilgrimage, and finally, divine Grace,of which the last one in particular ties in with the moral and religious concerns of redeeming a fallen people, one that has become lost in a spiritual wasteland that keeps the individual from Christianity. With this new conception of redemption,Eliot apparently means to counter the modern trends toward increasing physical desire or sensuality, and to stress the urgency of restoring faith in such an age.
