Isaac Bashevis Singer is regarded as the greatest contemporary master of story - telling. In his works, he portrayed a number of female characters, who were either flattened as good wives and good mothers, or treated as immoral seducers. Literary reviews seem to reach a general consensus that his creation reveals a significantly distinct male standpoint. However, Yentl, heroine of his masterpiece ＂Yentl the Yeshiva Boy＂ is quite different from the pattern of female images. To explore Yentl＇s various bizarre actions by means of Jung＇s ＂Animus＂ prototype theory helps to conclude that Yentl＇s idiosyncrasy is rooted in her psychological environment dominated by ＂animus＂ prototype, and that her final fleeing is an inevitable result from the conflict between her autonomous complex and the traditional Jewish social consciousness. The investigation of Yentl＇s spiritual world and her inner experience by the psychological approach develops a new perspective and dimension of Singer＇s character interpretation.
