In July 2004,the suitability of visible implant fluorescent elastomer(VIE)for tagging juvenile shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis(Mean body length 4.75 cm)was investigated.Tags of five different colours were implanted at two body positions in the sixth abdominal segment.30 individuals in each of 10 families were selected randomly, among which 15 were VIE-tagged,while the remaining 15 were used as control.A total of 150 shrimps were tagged and their immediate mortality, growth and tag retention were assessed against the control over periods of 30 and 60 days. The immediate mortality of tagged shrimps was low(0.6%)and no animal died in the control, and x2 test revealed no significant difference between the tested and control groups(P〈0.05).There was no significant difference in mean body length between tagged and untagged individuals over periods of 30 and 60 days, indicating that VIE tag had no negative effect on shrimp growth.Marker retention rate was over 99% through 30d and 60 d periods. In July 2005,108 families of F.chinensis(Mean body length 4cm)were tagged by VIE.Over periods of 30 and 60 days, tag retention was also more than 99%;and 210 days later, tag retention at different body positions was more than 90%.The successful application of VIE for marking the juvenile shrimps in this study is of significance for the breeding programme of F.chinensis.
