Objective To investigate the association of apnea-hypopnea indices with body mass index (BMI) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Method 57 cases of OSAS patients diagnosed by portable polysomonograph was recruited and divided into three groups according their BMI ( BMI≤23.9,24 -27.9,≥28 respectively). Data was analyzed by t-test with SPSS 12. 0. Results Correlation analysis indicated that the association of AHI and snoring scale with BMI was statistically significant, while similar association was not found between BMI and other indices. Inter-group comparison indicated that the three groups had significant difference in almost all the indices studied ( P 〈 0. 05 ) except AHI ( P 〉 0. 05 ). Conclusion The significant association between BMI and AHI indicated that as weight increases, the possibility of OSAS increases, although the weight is not the only reason that aggravates OSAS. With the increase of BMI, snoring scale increases, as well as AHI, cumulative apnea-hypopnea time. The indices mentioned above are of great importance when considering the treatment of OSAS.
