Steel plate piles were used as the supports of deep foundation pits employed in constructing rain water draining pump rooms in Guangzhou Xinguang Expressway. Based on an analysis of the safety and cost of employing such supporting piles, it is concluded that it is appropriate to employ the piles in constructing small-to-medium-sized deep foundation pits in some soft soil areas.
