From July to August 2005, Beijing Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics, in collaboration with XinCheng District Office for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments, carried out an excavation of a porcelain pit in No. 1 Yard of Pre-Maojiawan, Xicheng District, Beijing. Great deals of scraps of broken porcelain were unearthed. Most of the porcelains were made during the middle period of the Ming Dynasty, and some could date back as early as the Tang Dynasty, the Liao Dynasty, the Nurchen Jin Dynasty, or the Yuan Dynasty. It is revealed by some porcelains with reign mark that the pit formed in the Zhengde reign (1506 - 1521) of Ming Dynasty. Seen from unearthed condition, the pit was a refuse pit to dump waste porcelain pieces.
