Identification of Zi(子),the master of the H3 oracle bones from the Huadong Ruins which is dated to the Shang Dynasty,is a major unresolved problem.Scholars have suggested nine different possibilities and it still remains a puzzle.Among the suggestions, the arguments about that the master is the descendant of King Wojia(沃甲)or the Crown Prince of King Wuding(武丁)have achieved strong influence within the academic circle.Based upon the Marxist point of view about social status, this article cross examines the evidences about the activities of Zi on the oracle bones and the describtion about the duty of the crown princes in the pre-Qin historical documents. As a result,it confirms that Zi is the once Crown Prince named Xiaoji(孝己),one of the sons of King Wuding and his wife Fuhao(妇好).
