In situ infrared spectral studies on the activation of watersoluble Rh/P(mC6H5SO3Na)3 (TPPTS) and organicsoluble Rh/PPh3 catalysts have been made in the presence of Rh(acac)(CO)2 as the precursor. Under the reaction conditions of P/Rh=50, 20 MPa CO/H2 and 373 K, Rh/PPh3 can be converted to a series of Wilkinson type complexes HRh(CO)m(PPh3)n (m=1~3, n=1~3, m+n=3 or 4). In contrast, Rh/TPPTS only gives HRh(CO)(TPPTS)3. These facts provide a reasonable explanation for the relatively higher naldehyde selectivity of Rh/TPPTS catalyst in the hydroformylation than that of Rh/PPh3 catalyst.
