It has been found that the rate of esterification between sodium monobutyl phthalate and benzyl chloride can be raised remarkably by adding pyridine in the aqueous system, and the purity of butyl benzyl phthalate can be improved. In order to reveal the essence of this phenomenon, the catalytic behavior of pyridine in this reactive course has been studied by means of infrared spectrum, mass spectrum, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and chemical analysis. The experimental results show that pyridine can easily react with benzyl chloride and form Nbenzyl pyridinium chloride (onium salt). Pyridine first reacts with benzyl chloride to form this onium salt, and then the cation of this onium salt acts as a phase transfer catalyst in this reactive system. This cation is stable so that its pyridine group can not be easily set free in the course of acting as the phase transfer catalyst.
