Though it is considered the starting point for the Chinese new poetry, the early vernacular poetry made limited achievements in literary creation, for the early vernacular poetry was not stimulated by a spontaneous spurt of creative passion, but intended to meet the needs of literary revolution. In terms of personality and temperament, early vernacular poets were not poets in the true sense of the word, but in that special historical period, they assumed the responsibility for initiating Chinese new poetry. At the same time, the lack of literary resources, of constructive guiding principles for creation, and of common criteria for assessment all contributed to the difficulties for the creation of the early vernacular poetry.
