In The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, the question perplexing Prufrock is the conflict between sex and love. Prufrock is a self - conscious anti - romanticist with romantic ideals in the Genteel Tradi- tion. His problem reflects both the contemporary overemphasis upon spiritual love and rejection of sexual desires. T. S. Eliot does not try to release his hatred for women, but to explore the way of uniting spiritual love with erotic desire.
