Interpreting Translation Process from the Perspective of Adaptation and Selection

摘要从"适应"与"选择"的视角解读翻译过程,翻译就是译者的适应与译者的选择。借用"生命体"接受"自然选择"的基本原理和思想,将翻译定义为"译者适应翻译生态环境的选择活动"。"翻译生态环境"指的是原文、原语和译语所呈现的世界,即语言、交际、文化、社会,以及作者、读者、委托者等互联互动的整体。译者"适应"的是原文、原语和译语所呈现的"世界";译者选择的是对翻译生态环境的适应度和对译本的最终行文。这种描述可以表达为:翻译过程=译者对翻译生态环境的"适应"+(译者对适应翻译生态环境程度的"选择"+译者对译本最终行文的"选择")。简化地说,翻译=译者的适应+译者的选择。 Translating is in this paper regarded essentially as ＂a selection activity of the translator＇ s adaptation to the ecoenvironment of translating＂. The eco-environment of translating here refers to the worlds of the source text and the source/ target languages, embodying the linguistic, communicative, cultural and social aspects of translating, as well as such elements as the author, the reader, and the client. With the introduction of the concept of eco-environment of translating, the process of translating is described as that of producing target texts by ＂natural＂ selection through the translator＇ s adaptation to the specific eco-environment and the translator＇ s selection of both the adaptation and the final target text in terms of Darwinian principle of Natural Selection. The paper holds that this interpretation of translation process from the perspective of adaptation and selection will offer a new dimension to the study of translation as an academic discipline.
