Though both deal with the subject of "God", The Sea and Poison and Silence by the Japanese Cathohc writer Endo Shusaku differ markedly in theme. From The Sea and Poison to Silence, Endo Shusaku's literary creation has undergone a great change. In Silence, Endo Shusaku represents his conception of Jesus Christ as the God of Maternity. This image of Christ comes not only from the Japanese Catholic tradition, but also from his personal experience: his feeling of dying in a medical operation, his ardent love for his mother, and his Judas Complex.
