A Preliminary Study of the Muck-raking Novels in Early Modern China

清末谴责小说在讽刺社会、警醒世人方面曾经起到了振聋发聩的作用,对人们认识腐朽黑暗的官场和晚清浇漓的世风也有重要的意义。但在发展过程中,由于自身存在的弊端和作家思想的局限,限制了它的继续发展,因此,晚清谴责小说在做出重大贡献的同时,也暴露了它无法克服的弊端和自身存在的大量缺点。在晚清民初社会急剧动荡的转型时期,由于作家们不能跟上时代步伐转变创作思路和理念,也由于他们自己的阶级归属和价值取向之局限,使晚清谴责小说走向了消亡。

The muck-raking novels at the end of the Qing dynasty made much contribution to satirizing the society and warning the people as well as the revealing of the corruption of the officials and the society. However, these novels and their writers had their weaknesses, which hindered their development. The weaknesses were related to the changing society, their class consciousness and value orientation, which finally led to the disappearance of such novels.
