由于五线谱中的线和间只能表示钢琴白键上的音，如果要表示黑键上的音，就需要用到一些临时记号——如升号和降号。升号表示一个音符升高半音，降号则表示降低半音。如果一个音在同一小节单位里有多次重复，则这些临时记号对重复的音同样有效。要让一个音回到原来的音高，则需要使用还原记号。如果在一首乐曲中，某个音需要自始至终地升高或降低，则升降记号不是用在这个音每次出现时，而是放在乐谱开头、

Since the lines and spaces only indicate the notes on the white keys of the piano, additional symbols are used to indicate the black note the ＂fiats＂ and ＂sharps＂. The fiat sign shows that a note is to be lowered a semitone, and the sharp sign raises a note a semitone. Such ＂accidentals＂ as they are called, also affect the note if it is repeated within the same unit of rhythm the ＂bar＂. To restore it to its normal pitch the ＂natural＂ sign is used. When certain notes are to be flattened or sharpened throughout a composition, the signs are not used each time the note occurs, but are placed in their appropriate position at the beginning of the staff after the clef and also at the beginning of each line of staff down the page.
