通过外周神经切片观察发现,在神经束与其外面的神经束膜之间,存在由神经束细胞构成的上皮细胞鞘。该鞘一般由2—4层连续的单层扁平上皮构成,广泛存在于所有脑、脊神经及其神经节和植物性神经及其神经节内。其机能尚不清楚,但从形态结构特点和分布位置来看,它可能是神经束的支持、保护和绝缘装置,不但使神经束和神经纤维具有一定的形态结构,而且可使神经冲动在无干扰的情况下准确无误的传递。此外,还可能对神经纤维与结缔组织之间的物质交换具有选择作用。

It has been observed microscopically, With sections of peripheral nerve, that there is an epithelial neurilemma consisting of nerve-tract cells between nerve-tract and the surrounding membrane . The sheath is generally composed of 2-4 layers of tessellated epithelia and exists all over the cerebrospinal and autonomic nerves and herve ganlions. The function of the sheath is not yet clear, however, judying from the characteristics of the structure and distribution,it may be an equipment for supporting, rotecting and insiclatjng of nerve-tract, not only making nerve-tract and nerve-fibre have certain shape, but also the impulse be transmitted perfectly under the condition of undjsturbance. Moreover, it may function as a filter for substance exchange between nerve-fibre and connective tissue.
